Goodbye, Long Bay

Home Travel British Virgin Islands 2026 Goodbye, Long Bay

Yesterday, a storm passed by…not much rain, but a surge came in from the sea, so the water was too silty to snorkel in the afternoon. This morning, the water looks pretty clear again. So after breakfast, we will jump in for one last snorkel at Long Bay.

Of course, we had to have breakfast first! We had French toast topped with mascarpone and berries. MMmmm….

Ahhh… then we had to rest our tummies. 😉

For the snorkeling, we started out in the Bay this time, since we weren’t moored along the shore. We swam towards the point and tried to snorkel around there. But, the water was too choppy, with breakers. So we swam in along the shoreline.

This short video has a few new things to show you. There is a pair of Banded Butterflyfish that I don’t think we’ve seen before. Also, there is a Blue Tang that is getting cleaned at a cleaning station. Cool! Finally, I added some video of what we usually see underneath our boat.

The large Tarpons are always hovering in place unde the boat or next to it. We also frequently see Blue Runner Jacks swim by the boat. This time, a school of them swam by right as I was recording. And, I was able to get a video of a tiny transparent jellyfish. Since they are transparent, videos and pictures typically don’t work very well. This time, the background of the black boat was perfect for showing the jellyfish.

Anyway, those are some new things to see in this short video…

At the end of this post, there is also a short video onboard Dream On, as we sailed on our way to Diamond Reef.

We didn’t take a lot of photos this time. Here are a few …

This was a large purple sea fan. It so pretty swaying back and forth in the current. It’s unusual to see such a large sea fan that isn’t tattered a bit.

Next to the sea fan, you can see tiny yellow/black/white striped fish. Those little guys are juvenile Bluehead Wrasse! You see them cleaning larger fish all the time. Here are a couple of Blue Tangs getting cleaned. Look for the tiny yellow fish next to each of them. Cool, huh?

Here’s a closer picture of them…

This next picture as a LOT of different fish in it. A bit hard to distinguish them from the rocks and the blue hue of the water. But, you can lots of the French Grunts (yellow), a juvenile Parrotfish (greenish with red fins), a Blue Tang, Sergeant Majors (striped) and a few other fish. Just so much going on!

This one shows a couple of different types of Grunts.

Finally, it was time to head back to the boat. There are always fish hanging out under the boat. This time, we got a picture. The larger ones are the Tarpons, and the “smaller” ones further away are Jacks.

Finally, it was time to say goodbye to Long Bay. Here was our view back as we left.

The conditions were perfect for putting the sail up as we went on our way to Diamond Reef. Here’s a short video onboard Dream On. Jeff is up on the bridge reading. Captain Rob is at the helm. And the sail looks so pretty against the blue sky.

Next stop, Diamond Reef!
