Long Bay, Virgin Gorda

We stayed the entire day at Long Bay. Overnight, we were tied up to the shore. But, around lunchtime, a storm was blowing in, and the water surge was getting too strong. Rob decided to move the boat away from the shore because he was worried the surge would snap the ropes. We didn’t move far, just a bit out away from the shore, but still in the bay.

But first, we had breakfast, a morning snorkel and lunch! Today’s breakfast was pancakes and a bountiful fruit platter. Check out this gorgeous breakfast! We are so spoiled by Julia!

This morning, we snorkeled out along the shore towards the point of the island. There were a lot of fish and some interesting coral formations.

Here is a video showing a lot of those fish. At about 2/3rds of the way through, you will see two larger fish – a Blue Tang and a juvenile Stoplight Parrotfish (he has red fins)- getting cleaned by tiny yellow-striped fish. Cool! Also, at the end of the video, you will see a yellow fish. Surprisingly, that is a juvenile Blue Tang! Funny that they start out yellow and turn blue.

And, here is a fun, short video of squids! We’ve only ever seen them in the BVI, not any of the other places we’ve snorkeled. They are so cool looking! They like to hover and watch us. In this vid, you’ll see them moving their tentacles around, which we usually don’t see. And, in the very last few seconds of the video, you’ll see a very colorful squid. Sadly, I only have that 2-3 second shot of it. The cover shot you see below is from the video. So funny how they look like they have elephant trunks instead of tentacles. 🦑

And…. I had enough video to make one more movie. I’m sure you were all hoping for yet another snorkeling movie, right? LOL! 😂 This one has a mix of fish, although there are a lot of Blue Tangs. There just seemed to be a large number of them here. I like the music in this video. Well, okay, I like the music I pick out for all the videos I make. 😉

We saw a number of Bluehead Wrasse – this picture has two of them. I like the coral on the right side of the picture.

We were swimming around this giant rock formation, and Jeff noticed I was taking a video of him, so he took a picture of me…

And..this is from the video I got of him taking that picture of me!

So cool! We saw a group of squid! They are so interesting to watch – and they seem to be watching us, too. This green coloring is what was on the last squid in the above squid video. It looked fluorescent.

It’s funny that they seem to hover in rows. We saw 7 of them, all in a row. Unfortunately, that picture didn’t come out. But here is a picture of three of them in a row.

This is a neat coral growing on the rock. And, of course, some Blue Tangs!

This picture is neat – it caught all the fish at just the right angle. It looks like they are looking right back at Jeff. One of the fish looks like it has two eyes – but it’s just two fish stacked right next to each other. LOL!

The stripes came out perfectly in this photo of Blue Tangs. I read that they have these stripes at night and maybe when agitated or showing aggression. Maybe those two fish are showing aggression toward each other?

We have seen a lot of these juvenile Stoplight Parrotfish on this trip. This guy looks like he is smiling. 😊

And THIS is how the above Stoplight Parrotfish looks as an adult – so colorful!

Hmm.. I’m not sure if this is a Yellowtail or Redtail Parrotfish. It’s in the initial phase, so they can look very similar. Ah well…

What a great shot with the fins all spread out! You can even see the stripes.

What a large sea fan on this interesting formation. It’s great to see a whole large sea fan. I love watching them wave back and forth with the current.

On our way back, we ran into our friendly squids again. This time, a few of them were moving their tentacles – curling them down and then straightening them again. Not sure what they were doing?

Ah! There’s Dream On – our favorite boat!

So ended our morning snorkel. After relaxing a bit, we had a great lunch of salmon over a kale and veggie salad. The veggies included sweet potatoes, yum!

This afternoon, the surge came in, so Rob wanted to move the boat off the shorelines. He moved it out away from shore, but still in the bay. The storm clouds were passing over, and we saw this amazing rainbow over the island.

Well, with the surge, the water was too silty to see anything, so we didn’t snorkel again this afternoon. Instead, we just hung out on the boat, reading and relaxing.

Dinner time eventually rolled around, and we enjoyed the ribeye steaks that Julia made.

Dessert was poached pears – wow! This presentation was so beautiful.

Another great day in the British Virgin Islands!

Tomorrow, we’ll be moving on to another island.
