Dolphins!

Home Travel Galapagos 2025 Dolphins!

Today, we were going to visit San Cristobal Island for a walk. We got ashore and were changing into our dry shoes …

… when the call went out that a pod of dolphins was spotted. We all rushed to get back onto the two dinghies! Here I am, excited to be on our way to see dolphins.

It took almost 10 minutes to motor our way at high speed over to where the pod was. We were moving around the island and then suddenly could see dolphins swimming and jumping all around us! This was a HUGE superpod of dolphins! There were hundreds, probably thousands – as far as the eye could see.

In this picture, the dolphins are already surrounding our dinghy and the pod extends way out towards the island.

I included this picture below because it gives a great idea of how large this pod was. In the top left corner, there are two boats – the larger one is our sister boat and then there is a tiny little dinghy way in the distance (to the left of the other dinghy). This pod filled the sea from all around us to way out where that other dinghy was. It was huge!

It was awesome to be surrounded by dolphins! They loved to zoom and jump with our boat. They would zoom along under and next to it, frolicking with the wake. Here, you see my elbow in the right corner. I left that in the picture so you got the idea of them swimming with our boat.

This is a great picture that captured a dolphin’s face. You could have reached out to touch these dolphins, they were that close.

They were also jumping in the air a lot. But, it’s impossible to get a picture of that, unless it’s just a lucky shot. This image is a crop from a larger picture that had this dolphin jumping in the distance.

Here are a couple more photos of the dolphins right next to our boat…

The water was such a pretty teal green. You can see a bit of the boat in the bottom right corner of this picture. The water is so clear you can easily see the dolphins.

We took hundreds of photos and videos – yikes, it was a lot to cull through. 😉 Never fear, I did cull through it all and put together a few videos of our amazing dolphin experience.

And another video of frolicking dolphins…

Finally, this video is to give an idea of how large this pod of dolphins was. You’ll need to watch the distance in this one…

I hope you enjoyed the videos! 😀

Next, we motored on back, so head on over to the next post for more of the Galápagos…
