The RMS Rhone Wreck

Home Travel Virgin Islands 2025 The RMS Rhone Wreck

From Little Harbour, Joran took the boat to the wreck of the RMS Rhone at Salt Island. This large ship sank in 1867 during a hurricane. Sadly, 123 people lost their lives.

The Rhone was quite a large Royal Mail Carrier ship…

During a hurricane, the ship crashed on the rocks, breaking in two. Then, cool ocean water got into the hot boilers, causing them to explode. When swimming over the wreck, it sure looks like it exploded outward. This is one picture of the wreck…

The Rhone carried only one cannon and here it is…

After floating along the entire length of the ship, we explored the rocks in front of the ship.

We see so many Parrotfish in the Virgin Islands! I was looking at their different colors, and it ends up there is more than one type of Parrotfish we’re seeing. Amazingly, the juvenile coloring is completely different than the adult.

For example, here is an adult Stoplight Parrotfish next to a juvenile. Who would think these are the same fish?

Here is the Queen Parrotfish, which looks very similar to the above Spotlight Parrotfish. The Queen juvenile looks a lot different, though. The juvenile is the grey and white fish. The other fish shown with the juvenile is a Trunkfish.

Frequently, we’ll see groups of French Grunts (yellow stripe fish) hanging out in the nooks and crannies of the rocks.

These red Squirrelfish are usually hiding out, too.

Check out this alien-looking growth. We’ve never seen something like this before.

After a morning of snorkeling, Casey made us another great lunch. This was sliced filet mignon over a kale salad with lots of goodies added to it.

After lunch, we moved on to Cooper Island.
