Cooper Island

Home Travel Virgin Islands 2025 Cooper Island

Today’s afternoon snorkel was at Cooper Island. The sheer rock faces were beautiful in the sun. We snorkeled right up against the shore here.

We saw a lot of different fish here, and a couple of turtles.

This is what they look like when feeding…they just pick at the stuff growing on the rocks.

Just like previous snorkels, there were a good number of Parrotfish here. These below are three different adult Parrotfish.

And, of course, we saw many more of the Spotlight Parrotfish. I love how colorful they are!

We saw some more Caribbean Reef Squid. They look so cool floating around. Their eyes are so large it makes it feel like they are watching you. Not sure what the difference is between the two squids, but we usually see these in pairs like this.

The coral has virtually been wiped out here in the Virgin Islands due to hurricanes and coral bleaching. We do see a lot of “soft” items (such as sponges, sea fans, etc.) Here are couple of colorful specimens…

We don’t usually see these large Angelfish, they like to hide in nooks in the rocks. For this French Angelfish, it’s interesting that the more colorful version is the juvenile.

We have seen a lot of these Ocean Surgeon fish everywhere we snorkel.

These pretty Four Eye Butterflyfish seem to travel with others. And they are usually swimming away from us. So it was surprising to get close enough for this picture.

I saw this fish just sitting there with its mouth wide open. Not sure exactly what he was doing! I couldn’t figure out what kind of fish this is.

Trumpetfish tend to hang out near growth that camouflages them. This guy was just floating by in the open.

Ha! Another French Grunt. They are so colorful, but it’s rare to find them swimming out away from the hidden spots they usually hang out in as a group.

These are Bar Jack fish. Another fish that us always swimming around just out of range for us to take a picture. This guy was checking me out up close!

Last, but definitely not least, we saw some turtles in the seagrass eating their lunch.

Above the water it’s fun to checkout all the other types of boats. But, this boat was the most unique. It looks like a slice of history. Interestingly, this is a Dutch ship and our captain, Joran, is Dutch. Joran said this boat has 32 sails. Can you imagine what it would look like with all those sails open? Wow! What a beautiful ship!

And to round off our great day, Casey cooked up another delicious feast! This was a pesto pasta with roasted broccolini and crispy prosciutto. Yummy!

Tomorrow, we’ll visit Alice’s Wonderland for a snorkel!
