After Casa Batlló, we wandered about and looked at architecture from the outside.
We saw this very true sign over a cafe:
That nails it, huh?
We wanted to check out the outside of Casa Mila, another Gaudi designed building. We didn’t go inside because I had read that if you saw Casa Batlló you didn’t need to also go inside to see Casa Mila.
Casa Mila was built from 1906 – 1912. Surprisingly, it was very controversial because of its undulating stone facade and twisting wrought iron balconies. The city and the people in that neighborhood didn’t like the building. After seeing other Gaudi designs and Casa Batlló, I’m not sure why they were so against this building in particular.
Here is a pic we took of the outside we walked by:
Compared to Casa Batlló, this looks rather plain!
Here is a strange sculpture we walked by. I wish there had been a plaque with some info about it! What the heck is this supposed to mean?
We wanted to see another famous building designed by someone other than Gaudi. Unfortunately, the inside is now used for businesses, so all we could do is walk around the outside. But, it was a beautiful building. This is Casa de les Punxes….
It was designed and built by another Catalan Modernist architect, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, in 1905. It was built by the owner as a house for his three sisters. Wow, it is a very large building for just three people! I assume they had families that also lived there?
The entire Casa has six towers and is reminiscent of a medieval castle. The six towers have tall “spikes” on top, which gave the Casa its name – “punxes” means “spikes”. 🙂
The Casa had some very pretty decorations! Here is one of the balconies:
And, I thought this was an interesting way to break up a plain wall with some interesting angles.
A bit of a hard angle, but you can mostly see the mosaic here:
This view does make it look like more a castle!
We had were getting tired of walking, so we stopped at the Wild Foods cafe that was here on the bottom floor. It was a vegan cafe! We had some very yummy coffee there. My coffee was a latte made using oat milk and was delicious! We ended up lounging on a couch here for over an hour. Great rest for my bad foot! 😉
Then, we meandered our way towards our Michelin-starred dinner. On the way we say many interesting buildings. Here is another one that had pretty decorations …
OK! On to dinner!
